I’m Kim Hillman.
I’m a professional copywriter and marketing coach who helps businesses dramatically increase their revenue and growth.
I was born in the great northwestern state of Washington with a passion for writing….
In school I used to love writing stories and poems and sharing them with my classmates.
I got my first taste of non-fiction writing when I was in the sixth grade. My teacher had the class write a letter to the editor of our local paper, and mine got published. I wrote about why we need to keep our roads in good condition.
After high school I worked for a variety of businesses in multiple industries – from fast food to home party plans – but nothing felt like the right fit.
I did, however, get a hands on education in sales and marketing, as well as learn how to work with many different kinds of people.
In my early 20’s I found myself in the corporate world where I had visions of working my way to the top. I was married with a baby on the way and everything seemed perfect.
And then something happened that changed it all forever….
My son, Travis, was born with a severe disability called Cornelia deLange Syndrome, which caused both mental and physical delays.
A short time later I was taking my son to various therapies three times a week, and working a job was no longer possible. So, I left my corporate job to care for my son full time.
The doctors and therapists who treated my son gave me a grim outlook. They said he would never walk, talk or be potty trained.
Angered that the “experts” had given up on my son before he was even a year old, I took my son home and worked with him myself – in addition to the therapy he received.
Travis and I worked hard, but our perseverance paid off.
At the age of three my son walked without any support for the first time.
He said his first word, “Choo Choo,” at age four.
And by age five he was potty trained.
Working with my son was the greatest challenge I had ever faced, but I was absolutely determined to see it through.
The experience taught me that we have within us the ability to overcome extreme difficulties and hardships if we believe we can, we work hard, we keep going and never quit.
The outcome wasn’t perfect. Travis will always have Cornelia deLange Syndrome. But he surpassed the limits the experts had put on him and he enjoys a better quality of life because of it.
During my time at home I began to think about starting a business….
I started a handful of businesses over the next few years. Some succeeded in providing me with a small income, and although I wasn’t at the financial level I dreamed of, it was invigorating to be able to make money on my own terms.
I also thought about picking up my writing again.
I decided to write booklets for other businesses, to help them market their products and services. This eventually led to a desire to write my own booklets.
It was also at this time that I began to seriously study marketing and copywriting. And, not only did I find that I loved marketing, but I fell in love with long form direct response sales copy.
With my new marketing and copywriting skills, I marketed my booklets to large quantity buyers – businesses and corporations that could buy thousands of copies of my booklets at a time.
I also made the decision to coach other writers and develop products for them on how to write booklets and market them to large quantity buyers like I did.
Ten years later it was time to swim in a bigger pond….
Today I write sales copy for a select few, and I work with small business owners and solopreneurs to dramatically increase the results they get from their marketing.
My varied background has given me a special insight into many different industries and markets, whether business to business or business to consumer.
I’m a big believer in determination and hard work – in staying the course and hitting it hard until you reach your goals. It’s what I did with my son, and it’s what I do in my business.
If you’ve got a strong, emotional drive to succeed, a can-do attitude, and you don’t quit until you’ve nailed it, then you and I are going to get along very well!
